Salisbury Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Mushroom Gravy

A hearty comfort food classic — juicy beef patties simmered in a savory mushroom gravy and served over creamy mashed potatoes. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or family meal.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 package refrigerated prepared mashed potatoes (cooked per instructions)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 8 oz sliced mushrooms
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well by hand until combined.
  2. Shape mixture into 4 even patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties on both sides until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. Discard excess fat from skillet. Add butter and mushrooms, sauté until softened.
  5. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms, stir well, then slowly whisk in beef broth. Season with salt and pepper if needed.
  6. Return patties to skillet, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until steaks are cooked through and gravy thickens.
  7. Serve hot over prepared mashed potatoes.

Pro Tip: For an extra rich flavor, stir a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of thyme into the gravy before simmering.
