Ingredients

For the Steak Marinade:

  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper (any color), thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Cooked white rice or steamed rice, for serving

Instructions

Marinate the Steak:

  1. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, cornstarch, and black pepper.
  2. Add sliced flank steak and toss to coat well. Let marinate for at least 20 minutes.

Stir-Fry the Vegetables:

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and bell peppers. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until tender-crisp. Remove and set aside.

Cook the Steak:

  1. Heat remaining oil in the same pan.
  2. Add marinated steak in batches, stir-frying for 2–3 minutes until browned and just cooked through. Set aside.

Prepare the Sauce:

  1. In the same pan, sauté minced garlic and ginger for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Add beef broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and pepper flakes if using.
  3. Bring to a simmer, then add the cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce.

Combine and Serve:

  1. Return steak and vegetables to the pan. Toss to coat evenly in sauce.
  2. Cook 2–3 minutes more, until everything is hot and sauce has thickened.
  3. Serve hot over steamed white rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions, if desired.

Recipe Notes

  • Slice the steak thinly against the grain for maximum tenderness.
  • Use red, yellow, or orange bell peppers for added sweetness and color contrast.
  • Feel free to double the sauce if you like it extra saucy!
