Southern Cornbread Dressing
Warm, comforting, and perfectly seasoned—this classic Southern Cornbread Dressing is a must-have at any holiday table. Whether paired with roast turkey, glazed ham, or rich gravy, it delivers the soul-satisfying taste of the South in every bite.
Ingredients
- 6 cups crumbled cornbread (preferably day-old)
- 4 slices white bread, torn
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 celery stalks, diced
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 2–3 cups chicken or turkey broth (add gradually)
- 1 tsp dried sage (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 tsp poultry seasoning (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Sauté vegetables: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and celery; cook until tender, about 5–7 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Mix base: In a large bowl, combine crumbled cornbread, torn white bread, sautéed veggies, sage, poultry seasoning (if using), salt, and pepper.
- Add liquid: Stir in beaten eggs and gradually add broth, mixing until the dressing is moist but not soggy.
- Bake: Pour mixture into prepared dish. Bake uncovered for 35–45 minutes, or until golden brown on top and set in the center.
- Serve warm with gravy, cranberry sauce, or your favorite holiday meats.
Pro Tips
- Avoid Soggy Texture: Don’t overdo the broth—add just until moist.
- Adjust the Sage: Add more for a bold flavor, or reduce for a milder touch.
- Extra Flavor: Try poultry seasoning or a pinch of thyme.
- Make Ahead: Prep a day early, refrigerate, and bake when ready to serve.
