Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 lb. ground mild Italian sausage
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup chopped bell pepper (any color)
- 1 tsp. olive oil
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp. oregano
- 1/2 tsp. basil
- 1/2 tsp. parsley
- 1 egg, beaten
- 3/4 cup Italian bread crumbs
- 2 slices white bread, crumbled
- 1 tbsp. milk
- 8 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese (reserve 3/4 cup for topping)
- 1/4 cup parmesan cheese
- 1 cup marinara sauce, plus 1/2–3/4 cup more for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a small skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil and sauté the chopped onion and bell pepper for 3–4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef, Italian sausage, sautéed vegetables, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, herbs, egg, bread crumbs, crumbled white bread, milk, mozzarella (reserving 3/4 cup), parmesan cheese, and 1 cup of marinara sauce.
- Using clean hands, mix everything together until well combined.
- Transfer the meat mixture into a baking dish and shape it into a loaf. (An oval stoneware dish works great!)
- Spoon 1/2 to 3/4 cup of marinara sauce over the top and spread evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes.
- Remove from the oven, top with the reserved mozzarella cheese, and sprinkle a little dried basil on top.
- Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the meat is fully cooked (no pink in the center).
- Let rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Pro Tips
- Use freshly shredded mozzarella for best melt and flavor.
- Substitute ground turkey or chicken if you prefer a leaner option.
- Let the meatloaf rest before slicing—it helps keep it juicy.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, or over pasta for a hearty meal.
