About Amish Onion Fritters

Amish Onion Fritters, or Amish Onion Patties, are a beloved snack in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Made with simple pantry ingredients, they represent the Amish values of simplicity, community, and resourcefulness.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • Optional: smoked paprika, garlic powder, crushed chili flakes
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel and thinly slice the onions. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Gradually add milk and stir until a smooth batter forms. Add optional spices as desired.
  4. Fold in the sliced onions until fully coated. Let rest for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Heat oil in a frying pan to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Carefully spoon dollops of batter into the hot oil. Fry 4–5 fritters at a time.
  7. Cook each side for 2–3 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
