Old-fashioned cabbage and ground beef skillet in a pan

This old-fashioned cabbage and ground beef skillet is the kind of practical, hearty meal grandmothers were famous for: simple pantry ingredients, one big skillet, and a comforting dinner on the table in about 30 minutes. Tender cabbage, savory ground beef, and tomatoes simmer together into a cozy, budget-friendly classic.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Stir in the diced onion and minced garlic and cook for 2–3 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
  3. Add the chopped cabbage, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika. Stir everything together well.
  4. Cover the skillet and simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
  5. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Serve hot, as is or over rice.

Simple, satisfying, and straight from grandma’s kitchen — this one-skillet wonder proves that the best meals are often the humblest ones.
