Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie with silky chocolate custard in a flaky crust

Just like grandma made it. This Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie features a silky stovetop chocolate custard poured into a flaky crust and crowned with billowy golden meringue — pure nostalgia in every slice.

Ingredients

  • 1 pie crust, baked and cooled
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 egg whites (meringue)
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar (meringue)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (meringue)

Instructions

  1. Bake the pie crust according to package directions; cool completely.
  2. In a saucepan, whisk together the cocoa, sugar, and flour. Slowly whisk in the milk, then add the egg yolks and butter.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick and pudding-like, 10–12 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
  4. Pour the warm filling into the cooled crust.
  5. Beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar to soft peaks. Gradually add the sugar and beat to stiff, glossy peaks.
  6. Spoon the meringue over the filling, sealing it to the edges, and make decorative peaks.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 10–15 minutes, until golden. Cool completely before serving.

Cool, creamy, and chocolatey with that perfect toasted meringue — this pie never lasts long on the dessert table.
